Is Keyword research Dead ?

I am posting this as a question rather than as a Claim, as I am sure there will be people who won’t agree with me on this but as more time is passing by (we are in late 2008) and more, the search engines are evolving, I think Keyword research to build websites is going dead.

Building websites on keywords is getting way way difficult (remember time==money and you do spend considerable time in keyword research) and far less productive. Also the chances are, you will never rank for competitive keywords (law, health,mortgage etc) due to heavy competition and more content from authority sites. Wikipedia is there for almost every term at the top, which don’t help the cause much either.

Now the reason why I feels keyword research is dead because most of the tools do not(they can not) give very long tail keywords. They claims they do but they don’t. And since so many people have used these tools and harvest same set of key phrases to build pages that this puts you into difficult position. Unfortunately people also fails to see the competition in search engines that its almost impossible to overtake “webmd” and “mayoclinic” for any health related key phrase. The result, way too many people fruitlessly targeting “acne symptoms” and “weightloss pills”.

So to sum up the post, do keyword research but don’t spend too much time in it. Its not that effective as you think it is. There are just way too many parameters involved in ranking a page that somehow you will miss something anyway. although I know atleast one person with whom I regularly chats on IM, makes $50k/month.
