Lessons from WebHostingTalk Hacking
- 2 Comment tags
In case you are not aware of, last week webhostingtalk.com got hacked. The hacker got the access to old backups and through the info, hack into the site, deleting everything, wiped the complete site and also removed all the backups in whatever way possible. And now webhosting talk has the “recentmost” backup as new as of october 2008!
The have lost thousands of posts and people are speculating this to be a job of some insider, anyway this is all speculation. The amazing thing is, this was done to Webhostingtalk which is supposed to be the best forum of web hosts and which has hundreds of threads on hosting backups. Webhostingtalk is owned y iNet Interactive which also owns HotScripts.com as well as many other big sites and forums and have very good technical staff!
I can see the site is online and they are doing their level best to restore everything but isn’t it shocking ? It seems they took things too casually which happens wth everyone when it comes to security. I think this is a lesson for all of us, just imagine, you make all your money from your sites and suddenly it gets hacked and you loses all the information. What will you do then ? Now go and take backup of all your sites

It sounds like an inside job to me. What a shame though, to lose so much. Do you know if they will re-do the lost data?
