SEO and Google Search Wiki Review

Few Days back, google announced the launch of Google search wiki through their blog post and though I am still not sure why they gave it such absurd name, (google search wiki?) the new features added in Google are worth looking at.

But first you may like to view this official video where a google engineer is talking about what Google Search wiki is to see exactly what new features have been added in Google Search.

So What is Google Search Wiki anyway ?

Google has now added the feature where a user can customize search results as per his needs. So for a phrase “blue widget”, If I don’t like result 2, I can remove it, if I want result 5th to be at top, I can move it up. I can also make comments and notes for any result. These chances will only be made to your profile and you will only see them when you are logged in to your google account and your changes will have no effect on global results, so if you log out and then again search with “blue widget” you will only see default results.

How it will affect SEO ?

Now Google search wiki seems to be one of those small tweaks which google keeps on adding in search to improve user experience. Its amazing how google is able to do it over and over again and yahoo and live just follow (copy) google and then people wonder why they are not able to increase their market share.

Anyway coming back to the question of it affecting SEO, I don’t think this is going to make too much difference in SEO efforts (Yes, SEO is NOT dead as claimed by few after google search wiki launch) towards a website. But yes, now the quality of the site do matters as people can easily remove poor results from serps. Not only that, I am pretty sure if a person keeps on removing pages of a site, it may automatically start losing trust and eventually will lose its positions for that person (in future, this may happen in global results too). So now google has given the power to clean their index of spam websites to its users.

Unanswered Questions with Google Search Wiki

I am still not very sure about how effective Google search wiki will be if it got implemented at global level and whether the sites which are often getting removed from users starts to see rank loss since such kind of system can easily be manipulated. A person can easily start flagging its competitor’s website and starts putting his own site at the top using hundreds of google accounts and proxies.

Anyway right now Google search wiki hasn’t been implemented for everyone (may take some time) so its very early to comment on it without using it but still it’s a good move by google to clean the spam sites from Internet.
